I’m looking at creating a free forum and message board site for an RPG and I don’t know which website is best. I also want one I can customise quite a lot so that I don’t have to have a generic forums.

well if you have hosting space then use something like phpBB or SMF.
If not…couldn’t tell you.
If you’re looking for free and easy , I use http://s1.zetaboards.com/zb/index/ (formerly Invision)
We’ve been going for 5 years and have never had a problem –only been down for three days the whole time (server crashed)
i agree with pappy, zeta boards (invision) Is the best, most well known and easiest free forum site to use. there are thousands of skins to choose from and they are very easy to install. I have used invision boards many times and you can customize everything, even the post icons. Very easy to use.
Depends how complex you want it to be.
Try http://www.eboards4all.com – you get a number for you site but you can ask for a number a few times until you get one you like the look of – I picked one that I personally would find easy to remember. The support guy at eBoards is great, especially if you are trying to stick to the rules and only break them in error. He’s amazed me with his patience towards one guy who is always difficult. eBoards is fairly easy to manage. You can set up a demo board and try things to see if you want to use there. Also, there is a support board and you usually get answers within 24 hours. If he doesn’t answer you, he missed your question but that doesn’t happen very often. There is also spam posting protection; and you can have people able to set up their own user account or have to email the administrator (you) and ask for you to create a user account but you can delete users off the board if needed and managing messages by user is easy, too.
Also, try Invision – that has a lot more flexibility if you want to be able to set up different sections of a forum. Look at this forum to see what sort of thing is available:

I haven’t administered an invision board but my son has and they seem pretty good.
One of my favourite forums is BeeHive.
They’re not as common as other forums, so it wont look so ‘generic’, but is very customisable anyway!

If you have webhosting go for phpBB or Simple machines….
…this is the best way to be professional – also a .com domain name is a must for the overall image!
