It’s a CITY. Manchester is another city. You can’t have a CITY plonked in the middle of another city. Both cities are in the County of Greater Manchester, but they are governed entirely separately – for example, Salford Council blocks free speech by charging thousands of pounds to kids who want to save their school (this actually happened) and by blocking even vegetarian message boards on their computers. It also blocks Facebook and online versions of MSN, potentially making it very difficult for children with serious problems to get any advice (they may not feel comfortable calling a helpline, and the school computers are probably set up the same way as the library computers as they are probably also run by Salford Council). Manchester, on the other hand, allows free speech and only blocks porn and nudist websites (which are not the same thing) on its computers). The two cities have different levels of council tax, and different procedures for dealing with homeless people (in Salford’s case, the procedure seems to be “ignore everyone who needs assistance”). Salford has its own city centre. Manchester has its own city centre. Salford has Salford Cathedral. Manchester has Manchester cathedral. They are entirely different cities. So why do people think otherwise?
boatman, your work place got it wrong then. Maybe they were being ignorant, maybe they wanted to make it easy to find the place because more people probably know where Manchester is than know where Salford is, maybe another reason. But it’s still wrong.
Um, NO Fireball, this question has been posted in UK answers. And what you just said is another good reason my question about people LOOKING to see where they are posting questions/answers should not have been deleted nor argued with
Justin Time, do you ever read things?
Salford is not in Manchester. It is a CITY in the COUNTY of Greater Manchester, just as Manchester is a separate city in the county of Greater Manchester. Why would it have it’s own CITY council (as opposed to town council) if it was an area in a city other than Salford?
The postcodes are a historical thing.

I dont…THIS IS USA
Because it is. It has the same postcodes and telephone numbers
You answered your own question – Salford and Manchester are in Greater Manchester, most people call Greater Manchester “Manchester”.
I worked there and it was classed a MANCHESTER..
I will give you that one as I live 250 miles away Manchester.
Maybe they’re ignorant. It’s obvious Salford is not in Manchester – as you said, you can’t have a city in another city, and each city has it’s own procedures for homelessness etc. Maybe it’s cus people are confusing Greater Manchester with Manchester – but why don’t those who live in Salford or in Manchester seem to know any better?
